First Hair Extension Install: Timeline, Comfort & Aftercare
By On Point Hair Salon by Toni Fountain | August 22, 2026
A lot of first-timers tell me they’re nervous, and I get it. Extensions feel like a big step. The good news is most people settle in fast because the space is calm and I greet you with a smile, like you’ve known me for years. A first Hair Extension Install typically takes 2 to 4 hours depending on what we’re doing that day, and for our two-row hand-tied install, plan on about three hours for the install session itself. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the real timeline, what “normal” feels like, and exactly how to take care of your new hair in Ocean Shores weather.

Quick reassurance: Mild pressure or a little pinching during install is common. Sharp or intense pain isn’t. If something doesn’t feel right, tell me in the moment so I can adjust.
Before your install: 6 prep steps that make the day smoother
If you’ve been looking for a trustworthy hair salon and landed here because you want thicker, longer hair that still looks like you, prep is the part that takes your nerves down a notch. One of my extension clients put it perfectly after her consultation: she came in with fine, thin hair she hated, and she loved that I explained “how everything works and what is involved” before she committed.
My pre-appointment checklist
- Arrive with clean, dry hair. That’s non-negotiable for a great install and it’s part of how we keep the blend looking natural.
- Skip heavy products. Avoid oils, thick leave-ins, or dry shampoo right before your appointment so the foundation stays secure.
- Bring 2 to 3 photos. Show me the length and density you like so we’re speaking the same language.
- Tell me your routine. Surf days, fishing trips, helmet wear, gym schedule, or if you’re always in a messy bun. It changes the plan.
- Plan extra time for your first visit. The install itself is about three hours, and first appointments often include more talking, matching, and learning.
- Pad your travel time. I see a lot of people coming in from Westport, Moclips, Copalis Beach, Aberdeen, and Hoquiam. Give yourself a buffer so you’re not stressed walking in.
If you’re in the Point Brown or North Ocean Shores area near Point Brown Avenue NE and the north jetty, you’re close enough that this can be an easy stop before you head out for the day. And if you’ve got questions about longevity, I broke that down in how long a hair extension install lasts.
Your first two-row hand-tied install, start to finish (real timing)
Here’s what the appointment usually looks like when you’re in my chair for a two-row hand-tied extension application. I keep it relaxed and unhurried. People mention that a lot, along with how much I listen and ask questions so we’re aligned before I touch a single row.
1) Consultation and matching (15 to 30 minutes)
We talk through what you want today and what you want long-term. I’m going to ask about your hair history, including haircolor and any lightening, because it affects match and maintenance. Clients tell me they appreciate that I’m honest if something won’t work for their hair type. That honesty keeps your natural hair happy.
2) The install (about 1.5 to 3 hours)
This is the focused part. You’ll feel your hair being sectioned, you’ll feel some tension, and you might feel quick little pinches. That’s normal. What’s not normal is sharp pain. If you feel that, tell me right away. Adjustments are simple when we do them immediately.
Depending on timing and what your hair needs, this session can also include a root touch-up, highlights, a blow-dry, a haircut, or removal and reinstallation of two rows. I’ll tell you up front what we can realistically fit into your time.
3) Blend, style, and home tools (15 to 30 minutes)
This is where you see it come together. People regularly describe their extensions as “seamless, ” “undetectable, ” and “so natural and blend in perfectly.” Before you leave, I make sure you understand the brush and products I’m using so you can recreate the look at home, not just love it for one day.
"Toni is amazing! The moment you walk into her studio, you're at ease. It is calming and relaxing and she greets you with a smile, as if you have known one another for years ."

The first 48 hours: hair extension aftercare that actually matters on the coast
Right after an install, it’s normal for your scalp to feel a little “aware.” Most people describe it as pressure, not pain. Give it a couple of days and it tends to settle as you get used to the new placement and weight.
My non-negotiables for new installs
- Don’t wash for 48 hours. This gives everything time to settle before you add water and friction.
- Avoid heavy sweating for 48 hours. Ocean Shores weather can be cool, but active beach days still count.
- Use sulfate-free products. It’s one of the simplest ways to protect both your extensions and your haircolor.
- Brush gently and often, especially around the nape where wind tangles love to start.
Ocean Shores is beautiful, but maritime weather is real. Wind, rain, and salt air can rough up the surface fast. If you’re heading to the beach near the north jetty, I generally recommend a soft braid or low pony to prevent tangling, plus a light leave-in on your mid-lengths and ends. If you get hit with saltwater or chlorine, rinse as soon as you can and condition after. That one habit can save you a lot of dryness.

A few “insider” things I want you to know before you commit
I’ve been doing hair in Ocean Shores for 18 years, and I can tell you the biggest difference between a stressful first install and a great one is simple communication. Tell me if you’re tender-headed. Tell me if you wear your hair up every day. Tell me if you’re aiming for camera-ready hair for something like a photo shoot. One extension client told me she got “nonstop compliments” because people couldn’t even tell they were extensions. That’s the goal.
Something most places won’t say out loud: If I think the look you’re asking for will fight your natural texture or daily routine, I’ll tell you. It’s not to shut down your idea. It’s to keep you from paying for hair you won’t enjoy wearing.
And yes, I handle real-life extension problems too. I’ve had a vacationing client call in a panic when a weft thread broke and half of it was hanging off. I got her in same day and rebeaded and sewed it back in, so she could enjoy the rest of her trip. That’s the kind of practical support you want in an extension stylist.
Hair Extension Install FAQs I answer every week in Ocean Shores
How long does a Hair Extension Install take?
Most first installs land in the 2 to 4 hour range depending on method and any extra work. Our two-row hand-tied Hair Extension Install session is designed as a three-hour appointment, with time for consultation, install, and finishing.
Does a Hair Extension Install hurt?
You’ll usually feel pressure and some tightness while everything is being placed. A quick pinch can happen. Sharp pain isn’t normal. If anything feels too tight, tell me right away so I can adjust it.
Should I wash my hair before a Hair Extension Install?
Yes. Arrive with clean, dry hair. That’s the best foundation for a secure, natural-looking two-row hand-tied application.
How soon can I go swimming after getting hair extensions?
I generally recommend waiting at least 48 hours before swimming. After ocean or pool time, rinse as soon as you can and follow with conditioner to help with dryness and tangles.
How do I sleep with new hair extensions the first night?
Go to bed with dry hair, brush gently, then secure it in a loose braid or low pony so it doesn’t mat at the nape. If you toss and turn, this makes a big difference the next morning.
